Psychotherapy in Portland, Oregon
I provide individual psychodynamic psychotherapy to adults (18+) in Oregon and Illinois. Psychodynamic therapy is an evidence-based talk therapy grounded in the idea that we don't always know why we act and feel the way we do, and that much of emotional life occurs out of awareness. Our ways of being are informed by past experiences, as well as current environments and context. Psychodynamic therapy explores how these influences shape your inner experience and sense of self. Looking more closely at the unique constellation of your life can help you identify patterns that keep you stuck or unfulfilled and find new ways of addressing or accepting the realities of your experience. Therapy can also be a place to slow down and make sense of what hasn’t had space elsewhere, and to feel fully seen. Over time, this can help things feel clearer inside, and support a greater sense of relief, stability, and authenticity.
You can expect a confidential, collaborative space to talk about what’s going on in your life. This includes your relationships, your emotions, your body, memories, fears, hopes, dreams-- whatever is on your mind. This work is attentive not just to what you say, but what it is like to speak and experience it. Your feelings toward me are also part of the process, as patterns of relating to others outside of therapy are likely to emerge in our relationship. This can lead to meaningful insight and change as we notice and understand these patterns together.
There is no right way to do therapy, and the direction we go will ultimately be unique to you (and us). I offer my listening, nonjudgmental engagement, curiosity, and care. My style is warm, with a touch of humor and frankness. It is important to me to create an atmosphere where you feel safe and respected, and we will move at a pace that feels right for you.
People seek therapy for many reasons. Some concerns include chronic anxiety, trauma, depression, self-esteem issues, body image, questions of identity, life transitions, relationship difficulties, loneliness, or a persistent sense of disconnection, dissatisfaction, or emptiness. Maybe something just feels off or hard to put words to. We can talk about that here.
While I treat people from all walks of life, I often work with self-aware young adults coping with the pressures and uncertainties of adulthood. My practice is affirming and welcoming of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ clients. I consider myself particularly attuned to the experiences of those who may feel outside of dominant norms and expectations, or feel caught between different worlds, relationships, or versions of themselves.
